Railroad Photography: Making the Most of Autumn Foliage and Light

Bring your smart phone, digital camera or film camera, and get ready to take some amazing photos of the Museum’s historic locomotives!
Our latest photography workshop, led by Brian Solomon, will focus on working with autumn foliage and available natural lighting, as well as improving composition. The hands-on portion of the class will give participants an opportunity to examine and photograph several locomotives in our collection, including PRR 4-4-2 steam locomotive No. 7002, PRR E7A diesel-electric locomotive No. 5901, and Conrail GP30 diesel-electric locomotive No. 2233. Weather and conditions permitting, we may also examine and photograph several pieces of equipment in the outside yard.
Looking ahead, we are also hoping to schedule additional workshops on Tuesday, November 17, 2026, and Tuesday, December 15, 2026. Stay tuned for more details on additional offerings! (Dates and times are subject to change.)
“Railroad Photography: Making the Most of Autumn Foliage and Light” will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 9 AM to 11 AM, at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. The cost is only $25.00 per person. The class size is limited to 25 individuals and is designed for beginning photographers ages 18 and over.
About the Instructor:
Brian Solomon earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in photographic illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He produces a daily blog about railroad photography and his articles and photography have appeared in many railway magazines including Trains Magazine, Railway Age, Railroad Explorer, Railfan & Railroad, National Railroad Historical Society Bulletin, Germany’s Modelleisenbahner, the Journal of the Irish Railway Record Society and the UK’s Rail Magazine. Brian was presented with the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society’s prestigious Fred A.& Jane R. Stindt Photography Award in 2020 for his lifetime achievements in railroad photography.
Brian is the author of more than 70 books and writes a monthly travel column and feature articles for Firecrown Media’s Trains Magazine. He is the marketing manager for New Hampshire’s Conway Scenic Railroad, and lives with his wife Kris in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Many of his books are available for purchase in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s Whistle Stop Shop museum store.
