Dear Friend of the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation,

This year marks the 101st anniversary of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission’s opening of its first historic site, Old Economy Village in Ambridge, Beaver County. The site remains a major stop on the state’s Pennsylvania Trails of History. Today, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC)—created in 1945 to consolidate the functions of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, the State Museum of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania State Archives—is charged with the responsibility of preserving the commonwealth’s rich heritage.

In 1983, Gov. Dick Thornburgh announced the creation of a nonprofit organization, the Friends of the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, the forerunner of today’s Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation (PHF). Dick and Ginny Thornburgh were proud to enroll as early members alongside David and Julie Nixon Eisenhower.
During this season of Thanksgiving, we want to underscore our deep appreciation for the long-standing commitment of Pennsylvania officials and supportive citizens to preserving our abundant heritage.

Today, PHF is rapidly approaching its 40th anniversary. Since the Foundation’s creation, the model of private-public collaboration, a mutually “concerted effort” with PHMC, has worked effectively. The Foundation’s role in providing funds outside the state budget is vital. Please help us in our endeavor to foster today’s citizens with an enthusiasm for our heritage

Your generous gift assists us in protecting, preserving and interpreting our remarkable heritage. This helps ensure decades of opportunities for families, students, history buffs and professionals alike to visit and learn from our collections and sites.

Old Economy Village was just the beginning of what has become known as the Pennsylvania Trails of History, only one facet of PHMC. Over the years, your generous gifts to the Foundation have helped restore popular State Museum exhibits, such as the Marshalls Creek mastodon through the Buy-a-Bone campaign and Mammal Hall, 13 dioramas of Pennsylvania’s wild animals in their habitats, every child’s favorite. Perhaps you visited the Civil War 150 traveling exhibit or gazed upon the fascinating display of artifacts from the world-famous Pennsylvania Turnpike; both were supported by PHF fundraising. Did you know the Foundation helps make possible the State Archives’ Scholars in Residence Program, which provides opportunities for research on Pennsylvania history subjects to scholars, students, writers, filmmakers, educators and other history professionals?

Please join our board and members in helping to keep history alive in Pennsylvania by donating to the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation. These funds help support the work of curators, archivists, geologists, archeologists and architects.

Warm wishes from the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation’s board and staff for a joyous holiday season and a healthy and happy new year. We hope that 2023 is a time of tranquility and positivity for us all.
