A discussion of Thomas Bell's novel about the immigrant experience in the Mon Valley

Presentation by Dr. Kirsten Paine, a tour guide at Rivers for Steel and a visiting lecturer in the English Department at The University of Pittsburgh. She teaches and writes about Pittsburgh's industrial history, 19-Century Diaries, and women's Civil War writings.

Thomas Bell's 1941 novel, Out of This Furnace, tells the story of three generations of an immigrant steelworking family in Braddock, PA. Join us as we discuss the life and times of Thomas Bell, his novel, and the lasting effects of 19th-century industry in 21st-century Pittsburgh.
