Tuesday, 28 April 2009 14:05
The Pennsylvania Heritage Society has announced that Sheetz, Inc. is sponsoring two days of school tours at The State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.
Over 1,500 schoolchildren traveling from a variety of Pennsylvania cities and towns are scheduled to visit The State Museum during "Sheetz Days," May 7 & 8, 2009. "We greatly appreciate the support of Sheetz during our very busy spring school tour season this year," said John C. Leighow, Jr., the director of The State Museum. "Nearly 60,000 children from 64 counties visit our history, art, and natural science galleries every year to enhance their classroom learning."
The sponsorship by Sheetz is in conjunction with a special temporary exhibition, "A Common Canvas: Pennsylvania's New Deal Post Office Murals," produced by The State Museum and on view through May 17, 2009. The exhibition features murals that were created by artists employed by the federal government during the Great Depression for post offices throughout the Commonwealth.
Visiting students on "Sheetz Days" will have the opportunity to meet with a museum educator in the "Common Canvas" exhibition and will receive "Activity Sheetz," special hand-outs introducing students to various aspects of The State Museum experience.
"Sheetz has a long tradition of being involved in youth-centered activities so we are happy to make a commitment to support the school programs of The State Museum," said Joe Sheetz, Executive Vice President of Finance. "We believe kids should have the chance to experience a wide variety of things while in school and this program allows that."
