Preserving the Commonwealth's Memory

The Richest Legacy

Perhaps no other state boasts a broader or deeper range of American history as does the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. From the early colonial experiment of founder William Penn, to the American Revolution, Civil War, Industrial Age and beyond, Pennsylvania's history is American History.

The Pennsylvania Heritage Society® is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization supporting the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the official state agency charged with preserving and interpreting the Commonwealth's heritage and culture.

State Museum of Pennsylvania's Buy-a-Bone Campaign

In cooperation with the Friends of the State Museum
, the Pennsylvania Heritage Society is pleased to announce the launch of the Buy-A-Bone campaign at www.pabookstore.com as part of a 12-month effort to raise funds to reconstruct the Marshalls Creek Mastodon-- first unearthed in 1968 in Monroe County-- and to build the massive creature a new home at the museum.

The mastodon is comprised of 263 bone, which may be purchased for $25 up to $25,000 for the skull.  All donors will receive a certificate commemorating their purchase as well as an invitation to a special preview of the mastodon to be held in January, 2010.  In addition, all of the 'owners' will be named on a plaque that will hang in the new exhibit hall.
