About Us
Pennsylvania Heritage Society
Preserving the Commonwealth's Memory
Founded in 1983, the Pennsylvania Heritage Society is the co-publisher of the award-winning quarterly magazine, Pennsylvania Heritage®, and serves a critical role as the non-profit organization supporting the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the state's official history agency.
With the support of over 4,000 members from every corner of the state and beyond, the Heritage Society works with the PHMC on a variety of projects to preserve and interpret Pennsylvania's history, art and culture, including:
- Civil War Pennsylvania 150, a statewide coalition of museums, historical organizations, universities, and state agencies which is planning and implementing special and major programs commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, 2011-2015;
- Pennsylvania Civil War Muster Rolls Preservation Project at the Pennsylvania State Archives, funded by the national Save America's Treasures program;
- Teaching American History professional development for classroom teachers at The State Museum and Pennsylvania State Archives in partnership with the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, Lewisburg, PA;
- Signature Series, inaugurated in early 2006, this series provides PHS members and guests with special opportunities to meet popular historians, curators and authors, as well as to experience in-depth tours and rare behind-the-scenes experiences at Pennsylvania's historic sites and museums.
Vision
"Pennsylvania history IS American history" - no other state boasts the broad collection of seminal national events like that of the Commonwealth. Through its special relationship with the PHMC, the Pennsylvania Heritage Society has the opportunity to serve a broad and diverse membership of individuals, families, corporations, and organizations who have a keen interest in Pennsylvania's fascinating history. Because understanding our heritage is vitally important to our state and to our nation, we strive to make professional development opportunities available to as many of Pennsylvania's educators and classrooms as possible.
